She's got the face and the body, and now she's also got the business. She's best known as one of Ireland's favourite photo-call models but now Sara Kavanagh is branching out, fulfilling a lifelong dream to open her own beauty salon. Still just 22, she is capitalising on her profile and industry contacts, and is making her first foray into the world of business, launching Mud Pie, a brand-new salon with Hot Yoga and personal-training facilities.
She's always wanted more than life in front of the lens. Sara trained as a beauty therapist after leaving school and then ran a salon, before walking into Assets and launching her career as an Irish Model. It has been part of her plan to return to her first love all along. "I always wanted to do it while I was still young," she says. She's mixing business with pleasure. Sara's not worried about going into business with her boyfriend, personal-training expert Alan Byrne.
In fact, she credits him with being the catalyst who set her ambitions in motion. When he resolved to expand his personal training business recently, Sara came with him to view various premises. They found a huge unit in the Beacon South Quarter, in Dublin's Sandyford, that was formerly a beauty salon, and the idea for a joint venture started to take shape. "We already live together and we get on great," she says of why they will make a great partnership. "We trust each other enough, we're both pretty laid-back, but then, when it comes to things that are important, like setting up the business, we're both quite focused."
She's not hanging up her bikini just yet. While she'll take a couple of weeks off from her work as an Assets model initially, her many fans will be pleased to hear she'll be back strutting her stuff on Grafton Street before long. While she's busy modelling, she plans to call in trusted friends, as well as her mum and her sister, to keep an eye on Mud Pie.
